My husband and I met on match.com almost 3 years ago. We married in May 2010 and decided we didn't want to wait to try and start a family. We stopped the birth control and assumed it would take a few months at least to get pregnant. Boy were we wrong! Only 6 weeks after our wedding we were pregnant! At our 7-week ultrasound we were told that we were having twins. We spent the next two weeks telling everyone we were having twins. Then at 9 weeks we went in for a more thorough follow-up ultrasound. It was then that the tech discovered a third heartbeat! We were utterly shocked. We went from newlyweds to large family in a matter of months! The pregnancy was fairly uneventful until the very end. At our 27-week check up with our perinatologist we were informed that our Baby B had some strain on his umbilical cord. He shared a placenta with Baby C so there was some concern about twin-to-twin transfusion but the doc said not to worry as multiple pregnancies can sometimes show signs of stress early on but could turn out to be nothing. He scheduled us for a week out. Well, we didn't make it that far. The day we were supposed to go to that appointment, I passed my mucus plug and started pre-term labor. (Coincidentally - or not - this was the same night of the full lunar eclipse during the winter solstice). We went to the hospital and they administered a drug (magnesium sulfate) to stop the labor and also a steroid shot to help the babies' lungs develop. This worked fine and my contractions subsided, but during our in-hospital ultrasound they discovered that Baby B's cord, whose cord had shown stress a week earlier, had failed and he was retaining fluid in his abdomen. They had to wait at least 12 hours from the first steroid shot before they could give another and it really meant a lot to the babies to have two full doses so we had to wait until the next day to deliver. But at 2:50 pm EST on Dec 22, 2010 my beautiful BBB triplets were born! Nathaniel Robert (originally dubbed Baby B) was born first weighing 2lbs 11oz. Elias Matthew was next at 2lbs 7oz and Mitchell Henry came into the world weighing 2lbs 4oz. It was certainly a surprise to have them come so suddenly and so early after such an uneventful pregnancy, but if had waited even one more day Nathaniel wouldn't have made it. As it was, he had to be rescusitated at birth and he suffered a grade 4 brain bleed. Now he is a beautiful little baby and he and his brothers are doing great! They have been in the NICU for 8 weeks and we can't wait to have our little blessings  home where they belong.
